Motorcycle clutches are very good these days , i have no reason to think Yamaha are any different .
not had any problems yet but im bored and thought id start another post off , ill list common problems
with clutches and there remedies .
here is a little photo pictorial of a clutch rebuild i did today , not much i know ..
see this post here for Yamaha YBR 125 common clutch problems
In my original 2014 post, I looked at why the YBR 125 clutch can feel "notchy" or loose. In 2026, with many of these bikes having survived a decade of city riding, the problems usually fall into three categories: the Cable, the Plates, or the Basket.
1. The "Easy Fix": Cable Slack
Before you open the engine, check your "Margin of Safety" at the lever.
The Spec: You need 10mm–15mm of free play at the end of the lever.
The Problem: If there is no play, the clutch is slightly engaged at all times, leading to "Slippage." If there is too much play, the clutch won't fully disengage, leading to "Dragging" and difficulty finding Neutral.
2026 Pro-Tip: If your cable feels "gritty," don't just oil it. A frayed internal strand is a "Safety Message" that the cable is about to snap. Replace it with a genuine Yamaha or Venhill cable.
2. Symptom: The "Slipping" Clutch
If the engine revs up but the bike doesn't speed up (especially in 4th or 5th gear), your plates are worn.
The Cause: High mileage, using the wrong oil (avoid "Energy Conserving" car oils with friction modifiers!), or a too-tight cable.
The Fix: You’ll need new friction plates and potentially heavier-duty springs if you do heavy delivery work.
3. Symptom: The "Dragging" Clutch (Hard to find Neutral)
If the bike is hard to shift or creeps forward at lights:
The 2026 "Scuttlebutt": On high-mileage YBRs, the clutch basket develops "notches" where the plates sit. These notches trap the plates and stop them from sliding apart.
The Fix: You can carefully grind or file these notches flat (as discussed in the side-cover guide) to restore smooth operation without buying a whole new basket.
4. The Oil Factor
The YBR uses a "wet clutch," meaning it bathes in the engine oil.
The Rule: Use a dedicated motorcycle oil (JASO MA or MA2 spec). Using car oil is the fastest way to "bankrupt" your clutch plates and cause permanent slipping.
